Traveling Safely in Rio

Rio de Janeiro is a vibrant, welcoming city and a well-established destination for international medical congresses. Like any major city, a few common-sense precautions will help you have a smooth and enjoyable visit.

General safety tips:

Use pre-arranged transport. Book airport transfers in advance (see below) and use ride apps such as Uber or 99 rather than hailing taxis on the street. Avoid unmarked vehicles.

Keep valuables out of sight. Leave expensive jewelry, watches, and unnecessary documents in your hotel safe. Carry only what you need for the day.

Stay in well-traveled areas. The Sheraton is in the Leblon/Vidigal area, one of the safest neighborhoods in Rio. Nearby Leblon and Ipanema are excellent for walking, dining, and shopping during the day and evening.

Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid using your phone openly on the street, especially near the curb. If you need to check directions, step into a shop or restaurant.

Avoid the beach at night. Rio's beaches are best enjoyed during daylight hours. After dark, stick to lit streets and commercial areas.

Use hotel safes. Store passports, extra cash, and electronics you are not carrying in the hotel safe.

Carry a photocopy of your passport. Keep a photo or photocopy of your passport on your phone and leave the original in the hotel safe.

Drink bottled or filtered water. Tap water in Rio is generally treated, but bottled water is recommended for visitors.

The congress venue, social event locations, and recommended tour routes are all in well-established, visitor-friendly areas of Rio. If you have questions about local safety or need advice, Fernanda and the local team are happy to help: fernanda@fernandapresteseventos.com.br
